本研究著重於建構台灣及香港兩地殖民時期紅磚建築與式樣之間的關係，並探索當時建築活重主導者與營建體系的主導下，建材與式樣的相互關係。以及探索建築式樣背後材料的文化意涵，經過不同的殖民文化推手下，其相同及其異之處。

本文論之主內容分為三大部分：

(1)針對西洋標準磚及清水磚引入殖民地台灣及香港之過程進行了解

香港與台灣殖民時期的建築並非獨立自發的發展，而是歷經殖民的外力影響下之產生，因此本研究首先擬針對香港及台灣兩地對西洋標準造技術引進的歷史過程，作概略性的資料整理，以期了解西洋清水磚引入後對建築所造成的影響。

(2)了解十九世紀末殖民母國—英國與日本紅磚建築之思潮

探討英國維多利亞時期的建築思潮，受到工業革命的影響、哥德復興的風潮下，紅磚建築所呈現的面貌；並了解日本明治維新向西方學習，引入西方磚石構造的西洋建築，及受英國影響下所呈現的新時代建築美學。

(3)殖民地—台灣與香港歷經不同的文化推手，其紅磚建築在營建體系的主導下所呈現之異同

以殖民的紅磚建築為藍本，檢視歷經不同的殖民文化推手下，紅磚式樣的傳遞，及由材料所隱含的文化意涵。這種材料被賦予的意義，在分析殖民地營建體系及建築活動主導者的影響下，更為彰顯。

The following article aims at building up a relationship between the styles of red brick architecture during colonial period in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the colony of Great Britain and Japan respectively, by analyzing the using of red brick as inferior building materials and styles chosen by building participants and construction system and comparing the influences by different cultures, British and Japanese, according to colonial occupation.

This thesis can be divided into three main issues:

(1)Learning how was brick architecture introduced into Hong Kong and Taiwan by two different cultures. The development of masonry is passive and reluctant, initiated by Colonial occupation of Japan and Britain.

(2)Analyzing the characteristics of Victorian architecture in Britain, influenced by Gothic Revival, , and industrial revolution, whereas learning how did Victorian architecture influence the red brick architecture in Japan during the Meiji Restoration(1866-1869), also know as the Meiji Ishin or Renewal.

(3)By examining the cultural differentiation between Britain and Japan and their colonies, interpret the implication of red brick architecture as a style, representing elusive and inferior.
