  • 以日本漫畫家小田智仁的作品《古見同學是溝通魯蛇》為例,本研究探討漫畫如何 透過視覺構詞(visual morphology)與視覺隱喻(visual metaphors)來呈現社交恐懼 症(Social Anxiety Disorder, SAD)個體的心理狀態。過去對於心理健康議題的研究 多聚焦於電影(Byrne, 2009;Harper, 2008;Wedding et al., 1999)、電視 (Diefenbach, 1997;Signorielli, 1989;Wilson et al., 1999)及報紙(Wahl, 2003; Whitley et al., 2020)等媒體,該議題在漫畫上的研究仍相對有限。本研究採質性分 析,以該漫畫第 1、2 集為主要材料,探究其如何運用視覺元素如汗珠(sweat drops)、虛線描邊(dashed lines)、陰影(shading)、省略號對話框(ellipsis-filled speech balloons)等,來外顯古見同學的內在掙扎。這些描繪與 Yale Medicine (2025)所提出的社交恐懼症狀相呼應。本論文亦分析三個概念隱喻,分別為「內 在狀態是環繞自身的氣場(INNER STATE IS AN AURA AROUND THE SELF)」、 「失去思緒即失去視覺(LOSS OF THOUGHT IS LOSS OF SIGHT)」與「情緒本 能是貓的行為(EMOTIONAL INSTINCTS ARE CAT BEHAVIORS)」,揭示抽象情緒 與具體經驗(embodied experiences)之間的隱喻映射(metaphorical mappings)。研 究結果凸顯漫畫在心理健康議題上的教育與文化價值,藉由視覺符號的運用,漫畫 能彌補臨床語言晦澀難懂的限制。最後,文末探討日本視覺語言(Japanese Visual Language, JVL)的文化特殊性,指出漫畫中所使用的視覺符號對於不同文化背景的 讀者可能具有不同的詮釋方式(Cohn, 2010;Shinohara & Matsunaka, 2009)。本論文 在漫畫研究、視覺語言與心理健康等領域提供貢獻,展現漫畫如何透過視覺元素描 繪心理狀態,且能建構出讓讀者理解與感受這些情緒的視覺語言。

    This thesis investigates how Japanese manga represents Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) through visual morphology and metaphors, using Komi-San Wa, Komyushou Desu by Tomohito Oda as a case study. While mental health representation in visual media such as films, television, and newspapers has received scholarly attention (Byrne, 2009; Diefenbach, 1997; Wahl, 2003), manga remains underexplored in this context. This study addresses this gap by adopting a qualitative approach to analyze the visual strategies that convey the internal experiences of the protagonist in Volumes 1 and 2. It focuses on visual morphemes—sweat drops, dashed lines, and ellipsis-filled speech balloons—that externalize Komi’s inner states like nervousness, panic, or hesitation, reflecting symptoms of SAD as described by Yale Medicine (2025). This study also applies the Visual Metaphor Identification Procedure (VISMIP) to identify conceptual metaphors like INNER STATE IS AN AURA AROUND THE SELF, LOSS OF THOUGHT IS LOSS OF SIGHT, and EMOTIONAL INSTINCTS ARE CAT BEHAVIORS, revealing the conceptual mappings between abstract emotions and embodied experiences. The findings show that visual morphemes effectively convey the physiological symptoms of SAD, while conceptual metaphors serve as visual shortcuts for understanding complex emotions. The study further highlights the cultural specificity of Japanese Visual Language, noting potential differences in interpretation among international readers. Overall, this thesis contributes to manga studies, visual communication, and mental health discourse by demonstrating that visual morphology and metaphors can be employed to depict psychological conditions.
