SUMMARY
This project seeks studying current living conditions for lower-middle class residents in Tegucigalpa and developing strategies that, through architecture design and planning, will improve their quality of life. The methods used to achieve this were analyzing current living conditions in Honduras, determine what elements could become of use to providing safer living conditions, and adding new concepts of social interaction as elements that would increase safety in communities. It was determined that social interaction could improve living conditions in the country’s communities. However, recognizing that the solution of the root of this issue lies in architecture is essential to better understanding the objectives and possibilities of the project.
Key words: High Risk Areas, Safety, Bonding, Dwelling Strategies, Pattern Language
INTRODUCTION
One of the main issues in Tegucigalpa is criminality. Criminal activity has Hondurans in the capital living basically behind bars looking to protect their families and their possessions from danger. This way of life is neither completely effective against delinquents, but also creates marked social differences and divisions between the countries’ different social classes. The root of this problem lies on the unequal conditions that Hondurans live in where a very minuscule percentage of the population has the majority of the country’s resources and lack of academic and professional opportunities obligates citizens to choose delinquency as a modus vivendi. When children grow up in this environment, being a thief does not seem that abnormal. Thus, the cycle continues. In this set of circumstances, those most greatly affected are those that have enough to live with the basics, but without high walls and advanced security systems. These lower-middle class citizens are appealing targets to criminals, yet lack the resources to protect themselves.
Pattern languages are amongst the most important tools in this project. These are used as methods of communication between the designer, the user, and the reader. Christopher Alexander’s book about pattern languages plays a very important role in the process of design, as well as the analysis of current conditions in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Main results in this project mainly show how much a community could change with the implementation of different strategies with a social focus. Social interaction can give space to safer communities. This is a better strategy than simply locking communities, which not only does not guarantee the safety of those inside, but also creates a feeling of incarceration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Being a project mainly focused on design, the chief method of study is the design process itself. The design process starts from locating an issue. In this case is the issue of safety in Honduras. When completing this first step, an area of interest is selected. In this case, the area of interest was considered to be the Olympic Villa Residential Community. Having selected the area of interest and the issue, the next step is the implementation of the studied design techniques and pattern languages in relation to the selected community. Aforementioned pattern languages may be in Christopher Alexander’s literature or added by the author thinking of local elements of Honduran and Latin American culture and architecture. Lastly, results are gathered. These results will be able to determine whether or not these methods of design are effective and applicable in other communities.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The improvements to the Olympic Villa Residential Community are more than evident: improved pedestrian and vehicular circulation, slight increase in possible number of residents for future population growths, more public indoor and outdoor spaces, much greater and better relationship between residents, and better use of the creek on the south of the site. These are all straight-forward improvements. However, safety and social development, which were the main focus of the project, also advance dramatically. This means that the techniques employed can improve living conditions in residential communities.
CONCLUSION
Today in architecture, there are many things that are studied that are not that relevant to people in third world countries. When people live in places where they are in constant fear for their safety and are often robbed of their possessions, many things become luxuries. These luxuries, in first world countries, are not considered as such. Many architects research new technologies, aesthetical, structural, and historical issues. This is not wrong, it is necessary. However, when people lack their basic rights, as a professional, it is easy to feel that empathy and the desire to help. If architecture can help improving life conditions, it would be extremely meaningful to these people living in dangerous communities.
Honduras has many issues. Some of these can be blamed on lack of job opportunities, lack of access to education, historical events, foreign intervention, and corrupt leadership. However, architecture can help create the physical and psychological environment where it is possible for there to be improvement. Nevertheless, progress is always in the hands of those being helped.
