Picture books are classified as children's books and plays a significant role in the publishing industry. While the entire publishing industry is in decline, only children's books are growing steadily. In the overall picture books in Taiwan, Taiwan’s original picture books are less than 10%, and because of the scarcity of original picture books, the creators of picture books are at a disadvantage in the publishing industry. The production process deserves more attention, especially the roles of picture book creators which are editors, writers, and artists. Therefore, this research aims to understand the production process of original picture books and using the framework of creative collaboration theory to examine the interaction of creators.
The research adopted the mixed method, four steps were conducted using the following research design:(1) Online survey, to understand what the positioning of the picture book in the publishing industry is; (2) Case studies, it was selected an indie picture book publishing house that only published Taiwan’s original picture books: PaPa Culture. They have created several experimental picture books which are different from those in the market and compares two representative picture books with high exposure and great awarded from PaPa Culture and conducts semi-structured in-depth interviews. (3) Telephone interviewed with an editor who filled out an online survey and an artist who collaborated with PaPa Culture before for comparing the difference between other publishing houses and PaPa culture. (4) Semi-structured in-depth interviewed the founder of the PaPa Culture and the editor, to understand their perspectives on the picture book industry.
This research examined the PaPa Culture through creative collaboration theory and concluded the following: (1) Through survey and literature review, it was found that the artistic value of picture books is the key to the picture book industry, and artists are often at a disadvantage due to the lack of communication in picture book collaboration. (2) The cases of PaPa Culture was examined through the framework of creative collaboration theory, and a new pattern of collaboration was developed called the “Friends”, in which trust, shared vision, and informal partnerships were created through a flexible and smooth working method, and the three roles were professional division of labor, but they are closely interconnected. (3) Through reviewed PaPa Culture this research was conducted a collaboration guideline, the following three steps are: (1) Build trust: Understand the personality and works of the creators and provide the customized communication for each creators. Demonstrate the respect and like-mindedness. (2) Provide seed ideas and companionship. (3) Smooth and elastic communication.
Finally, this research was clarified the needs for the development of Taiwan's original picture book industry and provided a collaboration guideline and suggestions for picture book publishers.
