連動式指的是在單一個句子當中，兩個以上的動詞同時共享一個主詞及時態，而其之間並沒有任何明顯的連接詞予以聯結。此類句型主要發現在漢語、克里奧語(Creole)以及西非語當中(Sebba 1987, Seuren 1991, Aikhenvald 2006)。
有別於以往僅限於句法或語意上的單一層面研究，本文由句法語意介面探討此主題，從認知的角度著手，採用Croft (1991)的因果鏈模式(Causal Chain Model)分析中文「連動式」的語意展現情形。研究結果顯示，連動式可依動詞傳達的分段形式(verbal segment)分成聯合、嵌入、以及結合三種類別。而前兩者則又符合主語論元分享(subject argument sharing)的情形，後者則屬於受語論元分享(subject argument sharing)。此外，克里奧語和西非語當中的連動式亦可依此方式分析，並得到類似的結果。
另一方面，在第三類結合分段形式當中，由於其表面結構帶有致使(CAUSE)語意，因此我們進一步採用Goldberg (1995)的構式語法(Construction Grammar)加以剖析。研究發現，此類劃分為受語論元分享的動補結構和兼語式結構當中，確實都蘊含著致使意義。最後，我們檢驗湯廷池（1999）所提出兼語動詞的三個類別，藉由Rappaport Hovav & Levin (1998)的謂語分解(Predicate Decomposition)方法，本文提出以事件結構模式(event structure template)為主的分類更加適當，一方面除了再度驗證致使語義存在於這樣的模式之外，另一方面動詞之間所造成的語意差別，就可由模式當中表達特性(idiosyncratic)的常數(constant)加以解釋。

The Serial Verb Construction (henceforth as SVC) is a syntactic structure involving two verbs sharing the same subject and tense that appear simultaneously in a single sentence without any overt markers indicating their relationship. This structure has been found exclusively in Mandarin Chinese, Creoles and West African languages (Sebba 1987, Seuren 1991, Aikhenvald 2006).
Unlike the previous studies, the present study aims to analyze the SVC in Mandarin Chinese employing a cognitive approach, the Causal Chain Model (Croft 1991). The results show that the SVC can be classified into three types in terms of the verbal segments, including Combination, Embedment, and Conjoined representations. While the first two correspond to the phenomenon of “subject argument sharing,” the latter one corresponds to “object argument sharing.” Besides, the SVC in Creoles and West African languages also illustrates the same representations of the model.
Moreover, for the Joint representation type, which involves the CAUSE connotations in the surface forms, Goldberg’s (1995) Construction Grammar is adopted to look into it. And it is found that the structure involving the phenomenon of “object argument sharing” denotes the causal meaning. Furthermore, to explore the three subcategories of the pivotal construction classified by Tang (1999), the application of Rappaport Hovav and Levin’s (1998) Predicate Decomposition points out that a primitive predicate “cause” is shared by them. Then the distinction among these structures results from the “constants,” which represents the “idiosyncratic” meaning by modifying each structure separately.
