The purposes of the study are to explore the impacts of the number and frequency of volunteer participation on the quality of life, using the retired people as an example. The independent variables included the presence or absence of volunteer participation, the frequency of volunteer participation, and the total number of volunteering units. The dependent variable was the changes of the scores of the two waves of quality of life (using SF-12). SF-12 is defined as two scores, physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS). The linear regression model was used for analysis.
We found that volunteer participation, the participation hours, and the number of volunteering units had no significant impact on the changes in the physical score (PCS). However, the presence of volunteer participation, the 4-6 hours of volunteering, and volunteering for more than 3 units had the best effects on the mental score (MCS). Thus, this study concluded that volunteering can help improve the score of quality of life of retired people.
