嘉義市因應淨零碳排、少子化及高齡化等社會趨勢，提出「木都3.0」的城市概念，將木材作為木構建築的關鍵元素，兼顧環境永續與社會需求。木構建築不僅能有效減少建築碳排，緩解氣候變遷壓力，同時也作為文化與經濟的載體，帶動木材相關產業的復興，創造更多青年就業與創業機會。透過城市規劃與建築更新，嘉義市期望在發展低碳建築技術的同時，延續木構建築的文化脈絡，賦予舊城區新的生命力，並在木材應用的創新與多元中探索未來都市生活的可能性。
本設計論文以嘉義市為背景，探討木都願景下的都市更新與未來生活空間的可能性，研究聚焦於兩個設計實驗——大街屋計畫與木青工寓，分別對應舊建築的活化更新與新建建築的實踐策略，並考量老城中心與邊陲區位的城市特性，以及新式木構技術在小型與大型建築中的應用嘗試。
大街屋計畫著眼於連棟舊木構街屋的活化與街屋公共性的提升，透過模組化設計與新式木構技術的引入，實現現代需求與歷史文脈的共存。同時以群體更新取代單棟修繕的傳統手段，透過街屋公共通道與多層次的空間利用，發掘舊城區木構街屋在公共性與經濟效益上的潛力。
木青工寓則以教育部公有閒置土地為基地，結合城市加工廠與青年共享住宅，打造垂直公共空間與創業生活場域，展現木構建築在都市更新中的創新價值。從都市區位、基地配置、設計議題、空間計畫、設計策略與空間系統等層面進行分析，嘗試提出適應舊城區發展需求的新式木構解決方案，並以此擴大木都3.0的未來都市生活想像。
本設計論文從都市區位、基地配置、設計議題、空間計畫、設計策略與空間系統等層面進行系統性的設計討論，探索新式木構在都市更新中的適用性與多樣性，嘗試提出二種屬於木都的都市更新模式，為木都3.0的未來生活提供具體參考與設計指引。

Chiayi City has introduced the Wood City 3.0 concept in response to key societal challenges such as achieving net-zero carbon emissions, addressing the declining birth rate, and adapting to an aging population. By positioning timber as a central element, this initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability, reduce carbon footprints in construction, and stimulate the revival of the wood industry. It also seeks to create new opportunities for youth employment and entrepreneurship, aligning with the city's broader development goals.
This design thesis explores the potential for urban renewal and future living spaces within the context of Wood City 3.0, focusing on two primary design experiments: The Grand Street House Project and The Timber Youth Co-Living Project. The Grand Street House Project targets the revitalization of contiguous old timber row houses in Chiayi’s historical district. Through the application of modern timber construction techniques and modular design, this project aims to balance the preservation of historical context with contemporary needs. By replacing individual building repairs with collective renewal strategies, it enhances public accessibility and economic value, utilizing shared public pathways and multi-level spatial arrangements.
The Timber Youth Co-Living Project, situated on unused public land owned by the Ministry of Education, focuses on creating a space that integrates co-living arrangements with urban assembly plants. This vertical urban environment is designed to foster entrepreneurial opportunities and social interactions among young people, offering a dynamic and sustainable living space. The project leverages modern timber construction solutions to address the specific needs of Chiayi’s older city districts, providing a blueprint for the future development of these areas. Through these two design experiments, the thesis proposes innovative architectural strategies that contribute to the realization of Wood City 3.0, aiming to create a vibrant, sustainable urban landscape that meets the needs of future generations while honoring the city’s cultural heritage.
