  • The main purpose of this study is to understand what determinants may affect an individual’s intention in initiating social entrepreneurship. As research suggests that entrepreneurship intention may be predicted using Shapero and Sokol’s model of entrepreneurial event, this present study seeks to improve on existing paradigm of Shapero and Sokol’s to better appriciate the proposed framework in the social entrepreneurship context. Due to a lack of such studies conducted in Southern Asia, testing the model in this community may yield valuable insight. The present study presents data from a sample of Indonesian subjects. 430 respondents are enrolled to obtain the results for analyzing the hypotheses. The majority of the respondents are university student as well as entrepreneurs in East Java, Indonesia. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to evaluate the goodness of the measurement items, while Smart Partial Least Square analysis was employed to know causal relationship and theory testing. The results suggest that direct interventions of individuals with social problems are more likely to increase social entrepreneurship intentions. Practical lessons learned from the present study may be beneficial for policy makers, future researchers, and social entrepreneurs in realizing the potential of entrepreneurship for the business world.
