建築史是一門探究現象本質的學問，而建築設計則是一門關於回應生活現象的藝術。著眼於在當代台灣城市裡缺乏民主集會的空間，本論文企圖創造一個提供民主活動聚集的空間。過去台南曾經有一處提供市民集聚的神社，但今日卻被改為停車場，因此，本設計企圖將此停車場回歸為一處提供台南市民的民主廣場。

論文主軸可分為三個部份：（一）回到民主的源頭—古希臘，來了解民主的本意，並從研究古希臘的場所觀來構思民主廣場。（二）以雅典與Priene的 Agora為研究對象。透過生活的角度來觀察上古場所的空間佈局，抽離出民主空間之特質，來作廣場佈局的參考。（三）提出三種脫胎於古希臘Agora的城市空間之意象，由尺度大到小，依序是都市記號、林蔭環繞，與民主之聚，作為形塑台南民主廣場特質之訴求。

這是一段往返於現實與上古的論證歷程。本論文最終的設計表現就是透過融合二者之觀點來呈現。

Architectural history is a research for the being and architectural design is the art which reflects our life. Since the lack of democratic gathering place, this paper tries to create a plaza for this purpose.　In the past we indeed had a temple temenos, however it was transformed as a parking. This thesis design tries to resurrect it and offers a democratic place for the people of Tainan.

This paper is consisted of three parts as follows: 1, to back the very beginning of democracy—ancient Greece to realize the essence of democracy and to conceive the place for democratic activities; 2, to observe the Agora layout of Athen and Priene and to abstract their characters used as the paradigm for this design; 3, to obtain three urban images derived from Agora, respectively, urban mark, greenish shades, demos’ gathering as our design features for Tainan City.

This is an oscillating dialect between the present and the past. This paper aims to combine both and get a new view-point.
