This thesis explores the relationship between savings, inflation, and income inequality using panel data from 1970 to 2020, encompassing both developed and developing countries. Employing fixed-effects models and the System Generalized Method of Moments (SGMM), the research examines how savings influence the impact of inflation on incom inequality across different economic contexts. Robust statistical techniques were utilized to validate the findings.

The results reveal significant evidence of inflation’s role in exacerbating income inequality across the full sample. Moreover, increases in savings were found to significantly widen income disparities. However, when analyzing developed and developing countries separately, the impact of savings becomes not significant. Specifically, developed countries demonstrated potential for savings to mitigate income inequality during inflationary periods, while in developing countries, the interaction between inflation and savings showed no statistically significant effect on income inequality. Overall, the full-sample analysis indicates that both inflation and increased savings tend to amplify income disparities. Interestingly, the interaction between inflation and savings may help reduce income inequality. However, the underlying mechanisms differ substantially across economic contexts, suggesting the need for further investigation tailored to specific economic characteristics of different countries.
