This study identifies the benefits of sharing demand information from retailers to suppliers. Previous studies discussed only the value differences between situations with and without information sharing. This study considers a two-echelon supply chain for seasonal goods which has one supplier and one retailer to develop a model to obtain the optimal degree of information sharing. With regard to information sharing, though the retailer must spend related costs on collecting and sharing information, it can reduce the inventory cost for the supplier, and which can thus be the gain of information sharing. Therefore, the retailer would be willing to share information with the supplier and also increase his motivation of collecting information, and the optimal degree of information sharing for the supplier can be obtained through the trade-off between cost and gains. The results show that there is a positive correlation between the optimal degree of information sharing and a correlation between the demands of successive periods. The optimal degree would be affected by the cost of information sharing, and thus different supply chains would have different optimal degrees of information sharing.
