This study aims to investigate the risk perception and health beliefs among runners concerning air pollution. Utilizing focus group interviews across various regions, we examine the impact of air pollution on their health and attitudes. Additionally, we also explored the concerns of runners in participating in road races when facing air pollution. The results offer valuable insights for both the organizers of road running activities and governmental authorities.
The results indicates that a significant number of runners do not care about the harm from air pollution, largely due to insufficient and in-comprehensive awareness of air pollution-related information. When confronted with air pollution, most runners adopt dynamic health behaviors such as reducing speed, shortening running distances, switching to indoor treadmills, or incorporating alternative training methods. Static health behaviors include discontinuing running altogether, consuming lung-nourishing beverages, and undergoing regular health check-ups.
When runners face the threat of air pollution, their health behaviors (such as opting out of race) are influenced by perceived benefits and barriers. The organizer may cancel and refund all or part of the fee, or postpone it if severe air pollution occurs. However, the postponement of the race may affect the runners' other scheduled events or arrangements, so the organizer must design compensation measures for the runners. If the race proceeds despite poor air quality, organizers can mitigate risks by distributing free masks, providing real-time air pollution data, and offering health-boosting drinks to runners. Such interventions, however, require an efficient resupply infrastructure.
In addition, spraying water on the routes where gravel trucks routes to reduce dust is an alternative to decrease the impact of air pollution. Insurance companies can also offer race-cancellation insurance, aiding organizers in the decision-making process regarding event postponement or cancellation. Local governments might benefit from examining strategies employed by international road racing events, such as providing local businesses or factories with subsidies to reduce mobile pollution sources on the day of the event and maintain runners’ traffic safety more effectively. Temporary shutdowns of factories can also avoid dust from large vehicles movement and reduce air pollution from exhaust emissions.
