  • 隨著全球溫度的上升、乾旱事件的增加以及降雨強度的改變,這些影響都會造成生態系功能的受損、甚至衝擊生態系服務。其中,雲霧森林特別容易受到氣候變遷的影響,因頻繁的雲霧覆蓋、高濕度條件為維持該生態系穩定之關鍵因子。雲霧森林為台灣極具代表性之生態系,為了解其面臨之氣候變遷壓力,本研究將重建雲霧森林長期水文氣候。本研究於2012年12月台東延平林道採集霧林帶指標性樹種紅檜樹芯共106支,挑選6根長時間序列之樹芯樣本建立樹輪穩定氧同位素(δ18O)序列,並重建霧林帶過去480年(1533-2012)之水文氣候。分析樹輪δ18O年表結果顯示(1)樹輪δ18O可以成功反應雲霧林濕度環境變化,其訊號分別與梅雨季(5至6月)的降雨(r = -0.53, p<0.001)、4至9月的雲量(r = -0.41, p<0.001)及5至6月的平均相對濕度(r= -0.3,p <0.001)顯著相關。(2)檢驗δ18O與全球海水表面溫度之遙相關,發現δ18O與熱帶太平洋中部海水表面溫度呈正相關(r=0.71, p<0.001),其訊號可反應聖嬰事件之發生。(3)重建5-6月的兩量結果顯示,相較過去480年來,近30年為平均降雨最少、極端乾旱事件次數最多的時期,表示台灣雲霧森林正面臨著乾旱的壓力。

    Montane cloud forests are unique and important ecosystems in that frequent cloud cover consistently brings high humidity and regulates water resources beyond their geographic extents. Increasing global temperature, drought events, and changing precipitation intensity have been related to affect ecosystem functions and services. Montane cloud forests are among the most vulnerable systems due to their sensitivity to moisture change. However, limited instrumental records have hindered the efforts to better understand their hydroclimate change. Using reliable proxy to reconstruct long term climates is crucial to evaluate whether current condition is outside the range of natural variation. Here we reconstruct long-term hydroclimatic conditions in montane cloud forest in Taiwan by using stable oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) in tree rings of long-lived Chamaecyparis formosensis species. We obtained 106 cores in eastern Taiwan (Tai-Dong, 22°58'07.7"N, 121°01'13.8"E, 1500 - 2100 m.a.s.l.). Response analyses revealed that tree ring δ18O chronology showed significant correlations with May-Jun. precipitation (r = -0.53, p<0.001), Apr.-Sep. cloud cover (r = -0.41, p <0.001) and May-Jun. mean relative humidity (r = -0.3, p<0.001). Meanwhile, the tree ring δ18O was sensitive to sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (Niño 3.4) (r = 0.71, p <0.001) and may serve as an indicator of El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon. We applied tree-ring δ18O chronology to reconstruct hydroclimate for the past 480 years (AD 1533-2012). According our reconstruction, montane cloud forest in eastern Taiwan is exposing to the lowest level of rainfall and the highest frequency of extreme events for the past three decades. The cloud forest ecosystem in Taiwan is facing severe drought stress and climate change related risks.
