自19世紀末至20世紀，由於戰爭和經濟的諸多原因，許多來自中國的難民移居到越南。移居越南之後，該族群一方面慢慢融入本土化的過程，另一方面維持保持族群的語言與文化。目前，該族群被越南政府通稱「華人」(Người Hoa)，屬於越南五十四個民族之一。目前，越南華人集中住在越南南部特別是在胡志明市。胡志明市華人的人口占90%越南華人總人口比例。
越南胡志明市華人分為五個幫包括廣東幫、福建幫、潮州幫、客家幫和海南幫。為了探討胡志明市當代福鄉人的族語使用與活力的狀況，本人在胡志明市第五郡進行田野調查。在進行田野調查的過程中，本人使用觀察、參與、訪問、錄音與錄影的方式記錄西貢當代福鄉人使用語言的狀況。另外，為了瞭解受訪者的語言使用的背景，本人設計問卷，然後發給受訪者填寫。問卷的統計結果會成為基本的資料。根據問卷的統計結果，進一步分類對象，然後進行訪談。
為了探討胡志明市當代福鄉人的族語使用與活力的狀況，本論文集中探討該族群的語言使用比例、語言能力、母語認同、傳承語的教育及族語活力等方面。其中，本論文會根據受訪者自己評估語言能力的結果，結合觀察及訪問的過程判斷受訪者的語言能力。另外，本論文也根據受訪者自己評估語言使用比例來判斷受訪者對族語的使用比例。本論文也根據受訪者對母語的認同來判斷他的本土化的程度。
研究結果顯示，目前西貢當代福鄉人大多數都會講越南語。該族群較少使用族語做為交際語言，該族群的母語限制使用於私人領域。另外，該族群已慢慢出現轉換語言的現象；在家庭教導傳承於給下一代越來越不嚴格。這已造成當代福鄉人對母語的認同慢慢轉變。
另外，因較少使用母語已造成族語活力慢慢衰弱的現象。該族群的族語越來越面臨瀕危的局面。這種語言轉換與族語瀕危的現象顯示該族群在語言方面已漸漸深入越南化的過程了。若這個現象繼續延續該族群可能會跟明鄉人一樣完全融入越南本土化過程。

At the end of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century due to many causes of war and economy, many immigrants from China came to Vietnam. After residing in Vietnam, these Chinese immigrant groups, on the one hand adapted and integrated into the native society in Vietnam, on the other hand tried to maintain their own cultural identity. Today, Chinese immigrants and their descendants have become one of the fifty-four ethnic groups in Vietnam. The Chinese immigrants are currently categorized by the Vietnamese government as Hoa People (người Hoa) or ethnic Chinese. Nowadays, ethnic Chinese mainly inhabit in Southern Vietnam. In particular, Chinese people who live in Ho Chi Minh City account for 90% of Vietnam’s ethnic Chinese.
Ethnic Chinese in Saigon are categorized into five groups including Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hainan, and Hakka. In order to study the use and vitality of heritage language of Hokkien people in Ho Chi Minh City, I did a fieldwork in district 5 in Ho Chi Minh City.
In order to study the use and vitality of heritage language of Hokkien people in Ho Chi Minh City, the dissertation focuses on some aspects such as: the use of language, the language proficiency, the identity of mother tongues, the education of heritage languages, and the vitality of heritage languages, etc. In particular, the dissertation was based on self-assessment of the language ability of interviewees to judge their language proficiency. In addition, the dissertation based on self-assessment of the using language levels of interviewees to judge their mother tongue using status.
