Riding bicycle is a good way to transfer in urban area. However, there are only few people in Taiwan ride bicycle and take it as a communing tool. Moreover, the percentage of women who ride bicycle is obviously lower than men. It dose not means women in Taiwan do not want to ride bicycle but some difficulties made them choose not to ride. In functionality, the frame of bicycle has to be made lower so that women could ride the bicycle easily. Besides, for women, appearance is an important consideration to buy things. It seems the shape of bicycles are sharp-angles and straight lines, which seems female do not prefer. So, if there is any possible way to raise women preference by changing bicycle
shape?
Previous researches indicate that human have contour bias, which means people would prefer curved line objects than sharp-angles objects. Generally, contour bias can be applied to many design fields but it would still be affected by other bias of human. Moreover, there some researches point out that women like to notice the organic details in a product. According to the above two points, adjust the shape of bicycles and made it more curved seems can raise women’s preference of bicycle. To know the correlation between perceived curved lines and the women’s preference of bicycle shape would be the purpose of this research. So that we can find what kind of bicycle shape that women prefer the most. This would help designers to build a better looking of bicycle so that more women would be willing to ride bicycle.
Online questionnaire would be used to investigate that which kind of bicycle shape is women like the most. Also the degree of curved shape of the bicycles would be investigated. The result shows that perceived curve degree is positive correlated with female preference of bicycle shape. Notice that, just raising curve degree of bicycle shape is not enough. Only under some certain conditions, the raising of curve degree would be helpful in raising female preference. The bicycle shape design should 1. Not to use more than two curve lines and 2. Not to make the lines cross over each other 3. Avoid applying “S” curve in bicycles frame design. Or female preference could not be raised even curve line design was applied.
Moreover, perceived usability and aesthetic are both strongly correlated with
female preference of bicycle shape. Enhancing curve degree, perceived usability and aesthetic are all helpful in enhancing the female preference of bicycle shape. Female seems has different considerations in perceived usability and aesthetic. But the bicycle still has to follow the three conditions that mentioned in the last paragraph to perform well in female preference.
