This study is to investigate the effect of silane on water absorption and mechanical properties of unidirectional bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites. The untreated, alkali treated and silane treated continuous bamboo fibers were prepared from cutting the nature bamboo culm, and was combined with epoxy to form the composites by resin transfer molding. The basic characteristics of bamboo fiber composites such as density, equivalent diameter, mechanical properties were experimentally measured. Experiments using 5wt% NaOH, 5wt% NaOH+5wt% silane 6341 and 5wt% NaOH + silane 6106 were carried out to improve the water resistant property of the bamboo fiber/epoxy composites. The strength of bamboo fiber was found to decrease with the alkali treatment, and silane treatment increases the strength of the mercerized bamboo fiber. Alkali treatment results in decrease in water absorption by the composite. With silane treatment further reduction is observed. The water resistant is best for the silane 6106 treated mercerized bamboo composite in our study.
