本文嘗試以界的觀點論述福克納的小說《押沙龍啊!押沙龍》。此一嘗試乃肇始於Friedman 著作Mappings一書中理論運用的啟發,身為女性主義者,她努力用功於界,希望於學術性女性主義與其他主義之間,建構關聯與分野。界本身同時具有分隔及連接的功能,對於以美國南方薩特賁家族興衰為主題的《押沙龍啊!押沙龍》有其適用性。
這個家族故事係由四位敘述者在不同的時間及不同的地點分別談論。每位敘述者各有其一套說詞,充當理解薩特賁家族故事的基礎。每個人發展之論述,自成一格,有其領域及界限。閱讀之際,常發現面臨到地理上、認同上及論述上的界。
本文意圖探討,因為不同敘述造成隔閡界限,而導致文本中角色之間及讀者產生認知(認識論)及存在(本體論)的問題,這些問題一旦以自我中心出發,將對人際關係造成隔絕、疏離,危害及惡化的情況。福克納必然體察這個人生現實,他成功地透過多人敘述之設計將其呈現,並邀請讀者參與尋找改善界的空間。
This thesis is an attempt to read Absalom, Absalom! as a kind of border talk. The attempt was initially inspired by a theoretic approach taken by Friedman to address feminism in her book Mappings. As a feminist, she manages to work on the borders to establish “connection as well as distinction” between her academic feminism and other -isms. The function of borders as separating and connecting is applicable to the interpretation of Absalom, Absalom!, a novel that talks of the rise and fall of the Sutpen family in the American South.
Though a family story, it is narrated by four major characters in different times and places. Each narrator comes up with a version of his/her own design, providing a ground or context for understanding the Sutpen mystery. Each narrator develops the story into a narrative that forms its own territory and boundaries. In reading the novel, I have found myself constantly encountered with issue of borders, geographical, ideological and narrative.
This thesis is intended to discuss the borders erected by the talk of the Sutpen legend, which result in epistemological and ontological problems among its characters as well as its readers. These problems, as far as they are egocentrically oriented, work to separate, alienate, undermine and deteriorate interpersonal relationship among those concerned. Faulkner must have observed this reality of life. He successfully makes it known to his readers through his manipulation of the device of multiple narrators in Absalom, Absalom! and invites his readers to attempt any possible improvement in the border spaces.
