The development of the game industry is moving toward the integration of medical interaction, virtual reality, and entertainments. For example, Wii uses RF (radio frequency) module to simulate the reality of sports games. Its functions possess virtual reality and entertainment integration; hence, it breaks away from the traditional games’ mode but the new playing mode attains sport effect. The innovative technology of Wii is constantly adopted by medical institutes on rehabilitation in both local and oversea countries. Patients not only can do the required action of rehabilitation through the sport games, but also increases patient's interest in rehabilitation and make patients feel less painful during the treatment.
Wii is a completely new technology for most of the consumers and on physical therapy. It is worth to discuss the technology acceptance toward the adoption of Wii especially on physical therapy. The TAM theory (technology acceptance model, Davis, 1983) has been widely used on testing the technology acceptance level; however TAM only provides explanation of the technology users’ cognition. In order to strengthen the explanation of consumer technology acceptance, this study proposed to integrate the PAD emotional scales (pleasure, arousal and dominance, Mehrabian and Russell, 1974), relative advantage (Rogers, 1983) and subject norm (Azjen and Fishbein, 1980) into the research model to explore the technology acceptance’s attitude of physical therapy in different point of view. The study also proposes some advices to medical institutes or the suppliers in promoting Wii on rehabilitation in terms of marketing and service development strategies.
The empirical findings of this research suggest that medical officers with different backgrounds have different viewpoints on applying Wii to physical therapy. Moreover, from cognitional view, the relative advantage, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and subject norm have significant effects on medical officers’ attitude of technology acceptance, and the perceived ease of use and relative advantage have indirect effects on attitude of technology acceptance through perceived usefulness. From emotional viewpoint, medical officers’ attitude toword technology acceptance is significantly affected by positive emotions of rehabilitation by using Wii, such as pleasure, arousal and dominance. Meanwhile, by integrating cognitional and emotional aspects, the model of technology acceptance has provided higher percentage explanations than adopting these viewpoints respectively.
