本研究旨在探討帆船時代（Age of Sail）下，西班牙為其亞洲殖民首都馬尼拉（Manila）帶來的城市規劃觀點、以及當地因應此一城市規劃移植所形成的空間動態。在過往西班牙人的海外殖民經驗中，他們透過城市規畫塑造新秩序，將天主教信仰、伊比利文化與帝國榮光再現於美洲殖民地；然而，同樣的城市規劃方法與原則在跨越大西洋與太平洋、克服遙遠的距離後，則不盡然能適用於強權環繞、局勢複雜的東亞－東南亞海域。
1560年代，久居美洲的西班牙征服者抵達了菲律賓群島，為當地帶來「伊比利半島－美洲」的空間規劃觀點。這套模式之內涵可由兩個面向綜整而得，第一是美洲港口城市建造之案例，第二則是1573年的《印地亞斯法》（Ordenanzas de las Indias）。在馬尼拉，初期的城市規劃可對應至美洲模式，體現於城市的整體布局：以主廣場（plaza mayor）為核心、周邊布設主座教堂與重要政府機構，再以格網系統（grid system）往外延伸出街廓與道路。此空間型態不僅符合西班牙在殖民情境下的空間秩序塑造模式，更在精神上契合天主教對「天國之城耶路撒冷（Heavenly Jerusalem）」的詮釋與追求。
然而西班牙人逐漸意識到馬尼拉不同於美洲城市：一則，這座城市位於東亞－東南亞海域各方勢力交會的樞紐地帶，此一地理條件創造了多邊貿易接觸的機會，卻也帶來內外環伺的重大威脅。二則，相較於在美洲所獲得的主導地位，馬尼拉的西班牙人置身於數量龐大的唐人、日本人與菲律賓原住民等族群之間，殖民城市的維繫與加雷翁船（el Galeón）的營運皆仰賴與各族群間不停地協調與妥協。第三，在跨越兩洋的遙遠距離下，西班牙政府必須仰賴天主教修會介入世俗管理。
在此之下，馬尼拉的西班牙人快速築起了完整石造城牆系統，隔絕出城內屬於西班牙人的王城區（Intramuros），內部是大量的教堂與修道院，遠遠超過伊比利半島城市或美洲城市當中的數量；相較城內「安全且熟悉的伊比利環境」，城外稜堡大砲的射擊範圍之下是數個族群聚居區，各自以原鄉氣氛為主導，而隨著時間推進漸漸出現以教區教堂為核心的空間型態。這些空間線索反映出當代西班牙人在回應遙遠亞洲殖民地的複雜境況時，所產生的矛盾心理、防備態度和迂迴的回應方式。

This study explores the transplantation of Spanish town planning to its Asian colonial capital, Manila, during the Age of Sail. While Spanish colonial cities in the Americas were designed to project Catholic faith, Iberian culture, and imperial grandeur, these planning principles required adaptation when applied to the politically complex and geopolitically contested regions of East and Southeast Asia.
The research begins by tracing town development in the Iberian Peninsula during the Reconquista; then it examines the continuity and transformation of Spanish colonial planning in the Americas, drawing insights from two sources: case studies of Caribbean port cities and the 1573 Ordenanzas de las Indias. Finally, focusing on Manila, the study highlights inherited Spanish planning features and localized adaptations.
In 1571, Spanish conquistadors arrived in Manila and laid out the city, which soon became known as “a typical Spanish colonial city.” Its plaza mayor, flanked by the cathedral and government buildings, and the extending grid plan both imposed Spain’s colonial spatial order and symbolized the Catholic vision of the “Heavenly Jerusalem.”
However, beyond the Spanish transplantation, Manila's development was also influenced by regional maritime tensions, ethnic interactions, and local conditions. A strong stone wall enclosed the Spanish Intramuros, filled with churches and monasteries, while Extramuros housed Chinese, Japanese, and filipino communities. These spatial arrangements reflect the contradictory mentality, defensive posture, and circuitous response of contemporary Spaniards when confronting the complex circumstances of their distant Asian colonies.
