One of the practical way of place design is usually aim to strengthen the indigenous aura of the local spirits. However, this design presents a different argument. This thesis discusses about the spatial meanings of the city square and garden. It aims to explore a new form of public urban space that juxtaposes garden and square as a whole on the selected site of the Central Square of Vladivostok.
City squares are practical public urban spaces, while gardens are private paradise expressing personal inner fantasies. In this design, the garden lies right underneath the square. They serve multiple combined purposes, and yet operate independently. Therefore, the city square is not merely a center of the urban activity or a memorial place for national honors. It also reflects the deeper topographic exoticism of people and goes beyond.
The Central Square is the major site for urban events and celebrations. However, due to the discreteness between architecture and the city, the square is limited to little activities and restricted space. This design takes a series of action in regeneration of the square, proposing a new concept of urban design with the co-existence of garden.
This study proposes three design methods in spatial design. The archipelagos of the tropical world is conceived as the source for the site plan. Betel nut tree, cracked ice patterns and rocky mountain shapes were selected to be reinterpreted into architectural supports, canopy and skin respectively. In response to unique ambiance of the place of the Central Square of Vladivostok.
