The convenience brought by technology has made people heavily dependent on the internet—so much so that it has become indispensable in our daily lives. Accessing information has become nearly effortless, a far cry from traditional methods of information dissemination. Modern internet technology has long surpassed the limitations of time and space, bridging distances between people. Everything happening around us can be easily and thoroughly understood through social media. Social media, in this sense, is both the greatest contributor and the biggest culprit.
This study, based on the stressor-strain-outcome model, explores how Fear of Missing Out and boredom proneness influence social media fatigue as antecedents, with depression and anxiety as the consequences of social media fatigue. Additionally, the study investigates the mediating role of compulsive social media use between Fear of Missing Out and social media fatigue. The research was conducted using an online survey, with data collection completed by the end of March 2023. A total of 601 valid samples were collected, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used as the method of analysis.
The results show that Fear of Missing Out and boredom proneness are the main antecedents of social media fatigue, while compulsive social media use is the key mediating factor influencing the relationship between Fear of Missing Out, boredom proneness, and social media fatigue. Moreover, group analysis revealed that for users who spend more than three hours per day on social media, compulsive social media use leads to depression and anxiety. These findings highlight the characteristics of users from different age groups and the potential impacts of social media use under different circumstances. Based on these results, relevant suggestions are provided for both users and industry practitioners.
