距今2400至1600年前,臺灣逐漸從新石器時代晚期進入金屬器時代,承繼自新石器時代以來的交換網絡,持續與環南海地區交流往來,使得外來文化要素傳入臺灣,例如金屬、瑪瑙、玻璃等,漸次影響並成為史前文化體系的特徵之一。
位於臺灣東部的花岡山遺址,其史前上文化層為一個新的考古學文化類型──「花岡山遺址上層類型」,年代約為距今2100至1600年前,屬於金屬器時代早期,並於該文化層的墓葬之中,發現作為陪葬品使用的玻璃珠,根據其外型,玻璃珠被認為可能是「印度太平洋珠」(Indo-Pacific beads)。
本研究對花岡山遺址出土的玻璃珠進行一系列觀察與化學成分分析(LA-ICP-MS),目的在於理解玻璃珠所屬的古代玻璃化學成分類型與採用的製作技術,透過比較當前研究結果,以討論臺灣金屬器時代早期的對外交換網絡,了解其與環南海地區之間的聯繫。
The site of Huakangshan is located in eastern Taiwan. A new archaeological culture called “Upper Huakangshan Culture” in the upper cultural layer of Huakangshan was identified during the excavation in 2008 and 2012. The date is around 2100-1600 B.P. which is the period of the early Metal Age in Taiwan. Numerous glass beads were excavated, and most of them come from burials in the upper cultural layer of Huakangshan. Their appearances are like " Indo-Pacific beads" and they are interpreted as exchange goods.
This research will focus on the glass beads in Huakangshan through a series of observations and the chemical analysis (LA-ICP-MS) to characterize the type(s) of glass found on the site and how they were made. It also aims at discussing exchange network in the early Metal Age of Taiwan through comparisons with results available so far, and understanding the connections between eastern Taiwan and sites in the South China Sea region.
The results of observation show features of manufacturing traces on the glass beads indicate the manufacturing technique is the drawn method. The result of the chemical composition analysis suggests there are two chemical groups of glass: mineral-soda-alumina glass and potash glass.
According the manufacturing technique and chemical groups of glass, it suggests that the glass beads in Huakangshan were probably from Southeast and South Asia through the maritime exchange network of glass during the period of the early Metal Age in Taiwan.
