Recent organizational behavior research has increasingly focused on time perspective (TP), yet the emotional perception of the overall timeline remains understudied. Specifically, when individuals perceive their life timeline as balanced, it aids in adapting to environmental changes and predicting important life outcomes, potentially influencing employee effectiveness, an area previously unexplored in research. This study, through two investigations, reveals the significant implications of balanced time perspective (BTP) in the workplace. Study 1 validates the applicability of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory in Taiwanese workplaces. Through dimension classification by 60 university students, inappropriate items are eliminated, resulting in a 17-item Chinese short version. Subsequently, factor analysis and criterion validation are conducted using questionnaire data from 224 Taiwanese employees, demonstrating that the revised scale maintains five dimensions with good reliability and validity. Study 2 explores the antecedent and consequence of BTP in the workplace, as well as the moderating effect of Zhong-Yong thinking. Analysis of two-stage questionnaire data from 181 Taiwanese employees reveals: (1) a significant association between locus of control (LOC) and BTP; (2) BTP significantly predicts employee well-being (EWB; both etic and emic); (3) BTP mediates the relationship between LOC and EWB; (4) Zhong-Yong thinking strengthens the positive relationship between BTP and etic EWB, forming a moderated mediation model. Overall, this study highlights the importance of life timeline in Chinese workplaces and the deep-rooted nature of BTP in Chinese culture. Based on these findings, it is recommended that practitioners incorporate time perspective intervention programs into human resource management strategies to assist employees in enhancing effectiveness.
