We study in detail the effect of large deformation and material nonlinearity on the JKR (Johnson-Kendall-Roberts) theory of adhesive contact for a spherical rigid indenter in contact with a Neo-Hookean layer. The solution of adhesive contact of hyperelastic layer is obtained by using the large deformation JKR theory, which is based on the concept of energy releases rate and requires the solution of corresponding large deformation Hertz (non-adhesive contact) problem. In this thesis, we consider 3 types of boundary conditions on both top and bottom surfaces of hyperelastic layer. The corresponding LDH problem is solved using finite element analyses. Finally, the effects of the layer thickness and the boundary conditions on the adhesive contact are discussed.
