The objective of this study was to develop and empirically test a model on the adoption of radio frequency identification (RFID) in the context of high-tech manufacturing industry in Taiwan. Based on the theory of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), a structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to test the relationships among compatibility, complexity, relative advantage, cost, environmental characteristics, organizational characteristics, attitude towards the RFID, and use intention. The findings indicate that relative advantage and environmental characteristics are important factors in explaining respondents’ attitudes towards the RFID, while cost factor has a negative effect on attitudes towards the RFID. In addition, the results indicate that attitude towards the RFID and organization characteristics such as firm size positively influence respondents’ use intention. However, the effects of compatibility, complexity, and firm size on attitude towards the RFID were not supported in this study. Theoretical and practical implications of the research findings are discussed.
