To be successful in today’s competitive marketplace, companies must continuously develop new products. New product development (NPD) involves a cross-functional process in which different functional areas have to integrate to be successful. For this integration, companies are using mechanisms such as physical proximity, cross-functional teams (CFT), and job rotation, especially CFT. Hence, integrating mechanism issues have been received tremendous attentions from academician and practitioners. However, more integrating mechanisms seem not to guarantee more integration. This study attempts to integrate relevant literature to develop a comprehensive research model, as well as to investigate the interrelationships among fit between CFT and other integrating mechanisms, integration between functions, and NPD performance. Furthermore, we extend the scope from marketing and R&D to manufacturing function.
The model was tested with data collected from 125 manufacturing companies. We found that housing the three pairs of functions closer to each other and using ICT are the most effective mechanisms to foster integration. Both ICT and informal social systems appear to be very effective tools for enhancing NPP. Moreover, all of the three interfaces contribute to NPD performance, especially their cooperative relationships. Simultaneously, the higher degree of cross-functional team a company uses, the more attention it has to pay because of its offset effect on integration and NPD performance.
